Standard Chartered Private Equity ("SCPE") provides a professional shareholding partnership to companies that require equity funding for expansion, or to finance changes of ownership such as acquisitions or management buy-outs. Philosophy
As an equity investor we help companies capitalise on opportunities; our involvement can be the catalyst for faster growth or strategic acquisitions. We specialise in situations where others do not recognise value, and work with management and other shareholders to get an optimal deal for all concerned. As partners we align our interests with other shareholders to share risks and returns.
We assess value from the fundamentals of a company; profits, cash flows and real balance sheet worth. We will work in detail with companies to understand their plans and forecasts, and form our own view on these. If the market is mis-pricing prospects or we can create enhanced opportunities for the company, then we will invest.
Management is a critical part of any business, and we are concerned to ensure that the team is not only competent but shares our attitude to shareholder value. We want to understand the aspirations of those involved, and to have an open discussion around any issues. We believe that well-structured deals, which align the interests of all parties involved, have a higher chance of success for all stakeholders.
We participate directly as board members on investments and we are actively involved in strategic issues such as acquisitions, IPO preparation, and leadership development. Although the team has a broad range of business experience, it is not our intention to get involved in the operational aspects of our investees.
We are able to leverage Standard Chartered Bank's intimate "on-the-ground" knowledge of the Asian markets in which we invest and its strong client franchise. This can give us early access to opportunities, as well as assist in due diligence.
Investment Focus
We invest in mid- to late-stage companies evidencing positive cash flow that are in need of expansion capital, and in management buy-outs. We will invest from USD10 to over USD50 million in a single transaction, with a preference for deals of greater than USD25m. We will consider investments across a range of industries. Our objective is to see value and liquidity delivered within a five-year period. We target businesses whose principal operations and management are located in Greater China, Korea, South East Asia or India.
